Hi,
I'll assume that you have knowledge of programming but are new to Java. I'd say, before you even think of SCJP it'd be good that you get a hang of the language first.
A quick & free e-book might help you get started - Sams Teach Yourself Java 2 in 24 Hours. If you think you like it then find a little advanced book. Also, at this point you might want to start building small applications to test your Java skills.
Once you think you're comfortable with Java, you might want to look at Khalid Mughals or Kathy Sierra's book for SCJP & make up your mind between SCJP 5.0 & SCJP 6.0 . Focus on the cert at this point. Do understand that the SCJP exams test you for your knowledge & cramming sentences, words, code snippets, etc won't help. Focus on the why & how of Java & the SCJP should be a breeze.
